Short Answer
Because your instincts don’t always lead to what’s best. Following Jesus often means choosing a better way—even when it feels harder.
Why do my instincts feel so strong, even when they’re wrong?
Your first reaction is usually automatic.
- You want to win the argument
- You want to prove your point
- You want to protect yourself
But instincts aren’t always trustworthy. Sometimes they come from fear, pride, or past wounds—not wisdom.
Is there really a different way to live?
Jesus taught a completely different way of living:
- If you want to be first, be last (Mark 9:35)
- If you want to hold on to your life, let it go (Matthew 16:25)
- If you want revenge, choose forgiveness
Even Jesus modeled this in Matthew 26:39 when He said, “Not my will, but yours be done.”
Following Him isn’t about being perfect—it’s about trusting that His way leads to something better.
What’s one step I can take?
Next time your instinct kicks in—pause and question it.
Ask yourself:
- “What would the opposite look like here?”
- “What would love look like instead?”
Then take one small step in that direction.
It won’t always feel natural—but over time, it becomes freeing.
